How the H-1B work visa works
The best-known work visa — H-1B. Employer sponsorship, the cap, and the path to permanent status.
H-1B is a temporary work visa for specialty occupations. To get one, a US employer must sponsor you, and the role typically requires at least a bachelor’s degree.
The number of visas each year is capped, so a random computer selection (lottery) is often held. Once selected, the employer files the petition.
For many, H-1B is the first step toward a green card: later, the employer can begin the permanent-residence process through an EB category.
